Acne

How to reduce or eliminate acne?

DeLuke Dermatology diagnoses and treats acne, ranging from mild teenager acne to severe cystic acne. All ages, from children to adults, can be affected by acne. Treatment is aimed at reducing the bacteria and inflammation that causes acne. In moderate and severe acne it is important to prevent scarring, since this can be difficult to treat. If scarring does occur, laser treatments such as Halo can help.

Acne can be influenced by hormones and some treatments, such as spironolactone and oral birth control, treat hormonal imbalance.

Misconceptions about acne:

Acne Myth #1:  Do greasy foods and chocolate worsen acne?

No, this has never been proven. However, skim milk and a high glycemic index diet (white breads, processed foods, sugary foods) have been shown to worsen acne.

Acne Myth #2: Do only teenagers get acne?

No, at DeLuke Dermatology we frequently see adult patients with acne. In many of these cases they have hormonal adult acne that can be treated.

Acne Myth #3: Is acne caused by bad hygiene?

No, even those with perfect hygiene can still have acne. However, it is important to wash your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser. (Studies have shown that once daily washing is not enough but more than two times can be too harsh on the skin)
